Why the Dead Sea is unlike anything else
At 430 metres below sea level, the Dead Sea is Earth's lowest point. Its waters are almost ten times saltier than the ocean, making it impossible to sink — you float effortlessly like a cork, book in hand, staring at the Jordanian sky.
The extraordinary mineral concentration gives both the water and the famous black mud remarkable therapeutic properties. Visitors with skin conditions and joint pain have sought relief here for millennia, and the Dead Sea remains one of the world's great wellness destinations alongside its dramatic scenery.
What to do at the Dead Sea
The classic experience is the float: wade in slowly (the salt stings cuts and eyes sharply), let the water take your weight, and drift for 15–20 minutes. Then lather on the jet-black mineral mud, let it dry in the sun, and rinse off — your skin will feel noticeably smoother within hours.
Beyond the float, the Jordanian shore hosts resort hotels with private beach access, infinite pools, and spa facilities overlooking the water. We recommend arriving mid-morning and spending an unhurried afternoon — this is not a place to rush.
Practical tips for your visit
Even the smallest cut burns intensely in the Dead Sea. Shave the evening before, never the morning of. Keep your face dry, avoid rubbing your eyes, and rinse immediately if water splashes in — the lifeguards carry fresh water for exactly this.
The sun reflects intensely off the surface all year round. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and drink plenty of water. Mornings and late afternoons offer the most comfortable temperatures and the best photography light.
Getting there from Amman
The Dead Sea is roughly 55 km from central Amman — about one hour by private transfer. We include it as a half-day or full-day stop on many of our Jordan itineraries. Resort accommodation books up fast in spring and autumn, so reserve early.
Paired with a visit to the nearby Baptism Site or the mosaic city of Madaba, the Dead Sea makes a perfect day loop from the capital — or a natural overnight break on the way south to Petra.
