The significance of Al-Maghtas
Bethany-beyond-the-Jordan, known in Arabic as Al-Maghtas (meaning "the immersion"), is the site identified by biblical scholars, archaeologists and three Popes as the location where John the Baptist lived and where the baptism of Jesus took place. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
The site was inaccessible for most of the 20th century due to its location in a military restricted zone near the Israeli border. Archaeological excavations that began in 1994 revealed layered remains of Byzantine churches, baptismal pools, and hermit caves beneath the ground — some dating to the 1st century AD, consistent with the biblical period.
What you see on the site
The main archaeological area contains the foundations of three superimposed Byzantine churches, a pilgrimage path, monks' caves cut into the hillside, and a large baptismal pool fed by a water system still partially visible. The site communicates both its spiritual importance and its extraordinary historical depth.
A short walk leads to the actual bank of the Jordan River, where a modern baptismal area has been constructed with steps entering the water. The Israeli side of the river (Qasr al-Yahud) is visible across a narrow stretch of water — pilgrims on both sides sometimes stand within metres of each other, separated by the border, sharing the same sacred space.
Visiting today
Al-Maghtas is professionally managed with a visitor centre, licensed guides, and a clear circuit route through the archaeological zones. Guided tours take about 90 minutes. Photography is permitted throughout. The site is respectful and solemn — appropriate for its character.
Several Christian denominations have built small churches and pilgrim facilities at the site. Pope John Paul II visited in 2000, Pope Benedict XVI in 2009, and Pope Francis in 2014 — the site's significance to the world's 2.4 billion Christians is reflected in these visits.
Planning your visit
Al-Maghtas is 9 km west of Madaba and 50 km southwest of Amman — easily combined with Mount Nebo and Madaba in a half-day or full-day circuit. It pairs particularly well with a Dead Sea afternoon: the two sites are around 20 minutes apart by road.
Al Maqsad includes the Baptism Site in religious tourism itineraries and can arrange private licensed guides. The site is open daily except Tuesdays. Entry is around 12 JD (included in some Jordan Pass categories). Bring a respectful attitude — this is an active pilgrimage site.
