Downtown Amman: where it all started
Al-Balad, Amman's downtown, is the city's beating heart. The Roman Theatre — a 6,000-seat amphitheatre carved into the hillside around 170 AD — stands impossibly intact amid the city's bustle. Climb to the top for a view that layers Roman stone, Ottoman minarets, and modern concrete in one glance.
A few hundred metres away, the Amman Citadel crowns Jebel al-Qala'a with the remains of a Temple of Hercules, an Umayyad Palace and sweeping views over the city. Entry is inexpensive and the site is rarely overcrowded — come in the morning light for the best photographs.
Eating and drinking like a local
Hashem Restaurant on Al-Amir Mohammad Street is the most famous falafel and hummus counter in Jordan. It opens before dawn for breakfast and closes well past midnight. No frills, communal tables, and the best fool and falafel in the city — mandatory for any visitor.
Jabal Amman's Rainbow Street is the city's cafe strip: independent coffee houses, bookshops, street-art murals and rooftop bars with views over the amphitheatre. For a full dinner, the Abdoun and Sweifieh districts host everything from traditional mansaf to modern Palestinian-Jordanian fusion.
Shopping and culture
The downtown souk sells everything from spices to plastic kitchenware, but the real finds are in the craft shops near Al-Hussein Mosque — ceramics, embroidery, Dead Sea products and traditional keffiyehs. Jordan Craft Center near the Third Circle stocks quality artisanal goods.
Amman has a growing gallery scene. The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts near the 4th Circle houses the country's best collection of Arab and Islamic art, and its admission fee is nominal. Darat al-Funun in Jebel Luweibdeh hosts changing contemporary exhibitions in a converted Ottoman villa.
Day trips from Amman
Amman's central location makes it the perfect base for exploration. Jerash is just 45 minutes north — the best Roman ruins outside Italy. The Dead Sea is an hour west. Madaba and Mount Nebo make a pleasant half-day combination to the south.
For longer day trips, Ajloun Castle lies 75 minutes northwest and pairs beautifully with Jerash. The Baptism Site, Bethany-beyond-the-Jordan, adds a spiritual dimension to the Dead Sea day. Al Maqsad provides private transfers for all these routes.
