Family Travel in Jordan: The Complete Parent's Guide

Jordan ranks among the most family-friendly destinations in the Middle East — safe streets, welcoming locals, child-appropriate activities and resorts built for families.

Why Jordan works so well for families

Jordan is one of the most child-welcoming cultures in the world. Children are genuinely celebrated rather than tolerated — restaurants will fuss over them, Bedouin guides will include them in the experience, and shopkeepers will offer sweets before their parents have opened their wallets. Traveling with children in Jordan generally makes every interaction warmer.

The country is also notably safe. Jordan has consistently low crime rates, a strong tourism infrastructure, and roads and facilities that make family logistics manageable. Medical care in Amman meets international standards. The combination of safety, welcome and diversity of experience makes Jordan an outstanding family destination.

Best experiences for families

The Dead Sea float is universally loved by children of all ages — the buoyancy is hilarious and the mud application even more so. Most resort hotels have shallow pools and play areas alongside the sea access, making a full Dead Sea day work for all ages. Wadi Rum jeep safaris are exciting for children, with older kids (10+) able to try camel rides and sandboarding.

Jerash offers a living history lesson: the ancient chariot racing demonstrations held in the hippodrome twice daily are genuinely spectacular entertainment for children and adults alike. Petra's donkey and horse cart options near the Treasury make it accessible for smaller children who cannot manage the full walk. The Aqaba beach and snorkeling are natural crowd-pleasers.

Practical tips for families

Drive times between Jordan's major sites are longer than maps suggest — Amman to Petra is typically 3 hours. Plan accordingly with tablet-charged, snacks packed, and overnight stays at key points rather than long driving days. Private transfers (available through Al Maqsad) are considerably more comfortable than public transport with young children.

Summer (June–August) is very hot, especially at Petra and Wadi Rum. Young children find it difficult in midday heat above 38°C. Spring and autumn are far more comfortable. If you must travel in summer, plan all outdoor activities before 10am and after 5pm and build in long midday rests.

Best family resorts in Jordan

The Westin Saraya Aqaba has an outstanding children's club, a shallow beach area, multiple pools, and proximity to the city for evening dining. Grand Tala Bay is a full resort complex with waterpark facilities. For the Dead Sea, Movenpick Resort and Marriott Dead Sea both have strong family facilities.

In Wadi Rum, several camps now offer family tents with proper beds rather than sleeping mats, and activities scaled for children. Al Maqsad works with camps that specifically accommodate families well — ask us for current recommendations.
