The Jordan Pass: your biggest money saver
The Jordan Pass is the single most important purchase for any budget-conscious visitor. Starting from around 70 JD, it bundles your tourist visa (saving 40 JD) with free entry to Petra (saving 50–100 JD depending on days) and access to 40+ other archaeological sites including Jerash, Ajloun, Um Qais and Madaba.
For any visitor spending 3+ nights in Jordan, the Jordan Pass virtually always pays for itself just on the visa and Petra combination. Purchase it online before arrival at the airport to avoid the separate visa queue. This is the first and most important budget decision you will make for Jordan.
Budget accommodation options
Amman has a growing hostel scene centred on Jabal Amman and Downtown. The Jordan Tower Hotel, Sydney Hotel and Farah Hotel are long-standing budget staples. Dorm beds start from around 8 JD. In Petra, budget guesthouses in Wadi Musa village offer clean rooms from 15–20 JD per night, far cheaper than the main tourist hotels.
In Wadi Rum, simple Bedouin camps are significantly cheaper than luxury bubble options and offer the same extraordinary night sky experience. Prices for a traditional camp night with dinner typically start from 25–35 JD per person including dinner. The experience is often more authentic than the higher-end options.
Food on a budget
Jordan's street food is exceptional and cheap. A falafel sandwich from a street cart costs 0.30–0.50 JD. A full breakfast of hummus, foul, falafel and bread at Hashem in downtown Amman will not exceed 3 JD per person. Shawarma from a good local place is 1.5–2 JD. Supermarkets (Safeway and Cozmo are well-stocked) sell fruit, yoghurt, bread and cheap provisions for picnics at Petra.
The main budget trap is buying food inside the archaeological sites (Petra especially), where sandwiches cost 5–8 JD and water is inflated. Bring your own from a supermarket the evening before. A 1.5L water bottle outside any site costs 0.30 JD; the same bottle inside Petra costs 2–3 JD.
Getting around affordably
JETT buses connect Amman to Petra, Aqaba and the Dead Sea at reasonable prices (7–10 JD each way). Service taxis (shared taxis between cities) are even cheaper and run frequently between Amman, Madaba, Kerak and Aqaba. Within cities, yellow taxis use meters and are reasonably priced.
The one area where budget travellers overspend is day trips from Amman to Jerash and Petra — independent minibus services exist but require patience. For a small group, hiring a private driver for a day (through Al Maqsad) splits affordably between 4–5 people and is vastly more comfortable and time-efficient.
